Local Notes

Not every trip needs an itinerary. Sometimes it’s enough to explore a neighbourhood that knows how to slow down, surprise you, or just show you a good time without trying too hard. Hackney’s good at that. Whether you’ve got a few hours or the whole day, here are five ways to make the most of it, no rush required.

Start Slow in London Fields

Pick up a coffee from Climpson & Sons and wander through London Fields. Early mornings are best, before the picnics, before the noise. There’s something about a park with locals and no performance.

Swim Under the Sky at London Fields Lido

Heated, open-air, and surrounded by trees. This Olympic-size pool is open year-round and somehow never feels too crowded. Book ahead, bring your own towel, and prepare for the cold air–warm water contrast.

Browse Broadway Market
(Then Eat Something)

It’s one of London’s best small markets, and not just on Saturdays. You’ll find everything from handmade pasta to natural wine, vinyl to vintage jackets. Grab lunch from one of the stalls or settle in at Café Cecilia if you’re after a sit-down.

Catch a Matinée at the Rio

This Art Deco cinema on Kingsland High Street feels like a step back without losing relevance. Films range from indie to cult classics, and the popcorn’s good. Bonus points for the neon signage and velvet seats.

End with a Drink on the Canal

Pick your stretch, Regent’s Canal, around Broadway Market, or near Victoria Park. Walk a little. Stop at a waterside pub. Sit on the edge with a takeaway pint. There’s no need to overthink it. That’s sort of the point.

From park mornings to vinyl afternoons, Hackney has plenty to offer. Here are five ways to spend a day without feeling like you’re ticking boxes.
